Messaging
SMS, WhatsApp or email: which channel for your critical messages?

A critical message is one whose non-delivery has consequences: money, security or the customer relationship. In such cases, the choice of communication channel is not a matter of taste. It is a matter of strategy.
SMS: resilience above all
SMS is the only channel that works without an internet connection and on any phone, even a basic one. Its open rate exceeds 95% in under 3 minutes. For OTPs, transaction alerts and payment reminders, it remains unbeatable in sub-Saharan Africa, where data coverage is still uneven.
WhatsApp: engagement, not urgency
WhatsApp delivers remarkable engagement rates and lets you send rich media. It is ideal for marketing campaigns, customer service or non-urgent notifications. But it depends on an internet connection and an active WhatsApp account: two dependencies that rule it out for critical scenarios.
Email: for traceability, not speed
Email remains the most complete channel for formal documentation, reports and long-form communications. But with an average open rate below 25% and a time-to-read that can stretch to several hours, it is not suited to messages that require immediate action.
Our recommendation: combine the channels. SMS for urgency and guaranteed delivery, WhatsApp for engagement and conversations, email for archiving and compliance. FasterMessage lets you manage all three from a single platform, with automatic fallback rules.
