Running a successful business SMS campaign: 7 mistakes to avoid

SMS is still the most-read channel: over 90% of messages are opened, almost always within minutes of being sent. But that power turns against you quickly when a campaign is badly run. Here are the seven mistakes we see most often, and how to avoid them.
1. Sending without consent
Writing to contacts who never asked for anything means landing in spam and damaging your brand. You only talk to people who agreed to hear from you, and you keep a record of that agreement. It is also a compliance requirement, notably under the Digital Code.
2. Neglecting the sender
An unknown number breeds suspicion. A clear, identifiable sender name (your brand) raises trust and read rates. It is a simple setting, and often a forgotten one.
3. A message that is too long or confusing
SMS lives under constraint. An effective message holds one idea: what, for whom, which action. If the reader has to read twice to understand, you have lost them.
4. Forgetting the call to action
An SMS that informs without saying what to do does not convert. A link, a number to call back, a code to show: give one obvious action.
5. Sending at the wrong time
A promotional message at 6 a.m. irritates. You match the timing to the content and the audience, and avoid intrusive slots. The right moment sometimes doubles the result.
6. Not measuring
Without tracking deliverability and clicks, you are flying blind. You look at how many messages actually arrive, how many trigger an action, and you adjust the next campaign.
7. Confusing the channels
SMS is neither WhatsApp nor email. It excels at the urgent and the transactional: confirmation, reminder, code. For conversation, WhatsApp is often better suited; for detail, email. We go through that choice in SMS, WhatsApp or email: choosing the right channel.
A good SMS campaign is a clear message, sent at the right time, to people expecting it, with a single action and a measurement behind it. The rest is fine-tuning.
Moving to reliable sending
